Leisure and culture
Leisure and culture is one of the eight domains under the Canadian Index of Wellbeing.
What do you think about these indicators: which do you like and not like, and for what reason?
Are we missing any key indicators under this theme for Yukon?
Indicators
- Average percentage of time spent on the previous day in social leisure activities
- Average percentage of time spent on the previous day in arts and culture activities
- Average monthly frequency of participation in physical activity lasting over 15 minutes
- Average attendance per performance in past year at all performing arts performances
- Average number of hours volunteering for culture and/or recreation organizations
- Average number of nights away on vacation trips to destinations at least 80km from home
- Expenditures on all culture and recreation as a percentage of total household expenditures
- Average visitation per site to all National Parks and National Historic Sites

These are quite bizarre for the north. Cultural activities are not necessarily leisure. Vacation = travel 80k from home. That Measure is nonsensical in the North.

Measuring visits at parks and historical sites would measure tourists more than locals. Besides that, most of us can't go about our day without crossing a historical site.
80 km away for vacation doesn't make sense - people from Whitehorse camp at Wolf Creek, Marsh Lake and Lake Laberge, which are all closer than that.
Money spent on culture and recreation doesn't matter when so many events are free or part of family life. Time is more significant than money.

Again, I feel strongly that these indicators are representative of a certain 'type' of person, and what that person might identify as "leisure" and "culture". The indicators suggests a certain "norm" in terms of lifestyle, and therefore limits the options of leisure and culture. The population of the community defines what those indicators are, and so the survey should welcome the population to define, and reveal what represents leisure and culture for them.
