Healthy populations

Healthy populations is one of the eight domains under the Canadian Index of Wellbeing. 

What do you think about these indicators: which do you like and not like, and for what reason?

Are we missing any key indicators under this theme for Yukon? 

Indicators

  • Percentage of population that rates their overall health as very good or excellent
  • Percentage of population with self-reported diabetes
  • Life expectancy at birth in years
  • Percentage of population that rates their mental health as very good or excellent
  • Percentage of population with an absence of health or activity-based limitations
  • Percentage of daily or occasional smokers among teens aged 12 to 19 years
  • Percentage of population getting influenza immunization in past year
  • Percentage of Canadians with a regular medical doctor

I like a measure of vaccines, but I would not pick flu vaccine as the important one

I agree with yukonna's comment on vaccines. Percentage of infants/children receiving recommended vaccines? Why only teenaged smokers? And include vaping and marijuana. Maybe dollars per capita spent on alcohol too.

I agree with kapok, that percentages of users of any substance that would be considered self medication or addiction should be measured. I am starting to understand that these indicators may need to be much broader than I am comfortable with, and so I will take that into account. Again, I feel compelled to suggest that the indicators will not reflect the reality of the community, and therefore result in the subsequent inadequacy of the "community" to address the disparity of community well being that exists between First Nations persons, and those that are not.

In addition, I notice that diabetes is listed as a significant indicator...why not breast cancer and heart problems? An indicator of all recommended vaccinations? Percentage of persons with chronic conditions that limit their ability to participate in life fully. Percentage of people with disabilities...and what they can or can't access in the community. Support groups? Use of mental health programs provided in the community.
De plus, je remarque que le diabète est répertorié comme un indicateur significatif ... pourquoi pas le cancer du sein et les problèmes cardiaques? Percentage of population that feels they have tools and support to manage or prevent chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, and diabetes. Percentage of population that feels their health concerns are adequately heard and addressed by the health care system.
Pourcentage de la population qui estime disposer d'outils et de soutien pour gérer ou prévenir les maladies chroniques telles que l'hypertension artérielle et le diabète.
