Environment

Environment is one of the eight domains under the Canadian Index of Wellbeing.

What do you think about these indicators: which do you like and not like, and for what reason?

Are we missing any key indicators under this theme for Yukon?

Indicators

  • Ground level ozone (population weighted in parts per billion)
  • Absolute greenhouse gas emissions (megatonnes of CO2 per year)
  • Primary energy production (terajoules)
  • Residential energy use (petajoules per 1,000 households)
  • Annual water yield in Southern Canada (km3)
  • Viable Metal Reserves Index
  • Total farm land (hectares)
  • Ecological footprint

Hi folks! Under the 'Environment Domain', what indicators make sense for us as Yukoners?

Can you expand on Ecological Footprint, and how you will assess this indicator?

The 'Ecological Footprint' idea comes from the Global Footprint Network website (https://www.footprintnetwork.org/). The CIW leverages the network to calculate footprint, which is defined as: "Ecological Footprint of consumption (EFC) - The most commonly reported type of Ecological Footprint, it is defined as the area used to support a defined population’s consumption. The consumption Footprint (in gha) includes the area needed to produce the materials consumed and the area needed to absorb the carbon dioxide emissions. The consumption Footprint of a nation is calculated in the National Footprint Accounts as a nation’s primary production Footprint plus the Footprint of imports minus the Footprint of exports, and is thus, strictly speaking, a Footprint of apparent consumption. The national average of per capita Consumption Footprint is equal to a country’s Consumption Footprint divided by its population." Hope that helps!
